The Germans using mainly green tracer rounds during WW2 is sort of a Hollywood misconception, although not entirely false. Germany simply used what it could get its hands on, there was little in the way of overall standardization. White, orange, red, yellow, on top of green were all common colors employed by the various branches of the German military during WW2. Thus you could have a rainbow of colors lighting up the sky when German units opened fire. Tracer rounds however were mainly employed on aircraft, anti-aircraft guns, or naval warships.
